Timisoara Penitentary

Timisoara Penitentiary is the coordinating correctional facility in the West region of Romania. Approximately 900 inmates are custodied, classified in semi-open regime and open-regime. Timisoara Penitentiary employs 350 correctional officers. Administrative departments and ten detention sections are situated in Timisoara, the institution also administers two external sections and farms in Timisoara and Buzias. Timisoara Penitentiary's mission is ensuring the custody, security and safety of the incarcerated persons and supporting them in order to reintegrate into society. More than 60% of the inmates work every year inside or outside of the prison and all of them are involved in educational, psychological, social evaluation, counseling, programs or activities. Timisoara Penitentiary has multiple partnerships with NGOs and public institutions on national and transnational levels. Under these partnerships social reintegration activities for inmates in the community were developed and European projects were implemented. The penitentiary was the applicant for the KA2 strategic partnership ”Innovation, Development and Communication for a better education in Prison System” 2014-1-RO01-KA Project partner in the KA2 ”Ecological Economics in Prison Work Administration”(ECOPRIS) - 2014-1-PT1-KA. Implemented the Interreg IPA Cross Border Cooperation Romania-Serbia Project RORS10 ”A new chance for social inclusion of inmates”. Open to developing projects that rethink the corrections-society interaction and development on a transnational level.
