Dr. I. Kamil Tarhan Primay School

a)Dr. I. Kamil Tarhan Primary School is located in Mersin Province that is one of the biggest cities in southern Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast between Antalya and Adana. The city has a significant history for many civilizations in the past. The province has turned to be attractive for the migrant families from neighbourhood cities for better economical and social conditions. Our school is a formal primary school. The school has a student population of about 657; 351 boys and 306 girls. Our students are aged 6 to 10. We have a staff of 31; 4 pre-primary teachers, 1 English teacher, 20 elementary education teachers, 2 psychological counseling and guidance teachers, a headmaster, 2 submanagers and 1 officer. We have double shift schooling( morning classes and afternoon classes). Dr. I. Kamil Tarhan Primary School was opened in 1979 and named “Dr. İsmail Kamil Tarhan” to the honorable memory of Doctor İsmail Kamil Tarhan who donated the school building land. Our school has 12 classrooms, 2 classes of Pre-primay education, a teachers’ room, a psychological counseling and guidance teachers’ room, a submanagers’ room, a headmaster room and a multi purpose lounge. Most of our students and their parents are people whom have come from neighbour cities and form south-east of Turkey. Families whom have come from south-east of Turkey are generally poor people whom have come to Mersin for a better life. So, our students and their families have different social and cultural backgrounds. b)We want to develop ourselves as staff and students about European education sytems like education of democratic citizienship, multicultural education, entrepreneurial education and want to create and develope children’s view of Eupropean culture, traditions and values. In the framework of the project we would like to know and enjoy the cultural diversity of this partnership and exchange best implementations while being aware of intercultural issues. It will also be a unique experience for us to promote co-operation with the schools in EU countries, to provide quality of study forms in the areas apart from curricula and to lead to plan personal development through various learning environments. We are eager to do the best for our students. Through our Comenius project 1-2-3 Health! We already developed ourselves as staff and students about European education systems. We also want to bring Europe and the European community closer to us and our students and to introduce the European dimension in education
