In Portugal, JRS was created in 1992, since then it has focused on social, psychological, medical, legal and market integration support to migrants and refugees, as well as sheltering of homeless migrants (Centro Pedro Arrupe), support to detained migrants (Unidade Habitacional de Santo António), Portuguese language courses and various skills trainings, among others. Currently, JRS Portugal is also responsible for the Technical Secretariat of the Portuguese Refugee Support Platform (PAR) for managing the Temporary Center for Refugees (CATR) from the Lisbon Municipality, as well as for directly hosting a number of refugee families in autonomous houses.
