ENGLISH VERSION The ijgd is a supporter of international youth work and provides voluntary services for young people in various and from various countries since 1949. The organization was founded right after and still under the impression of World War II, in order to create international understanding and peace. The intention of the young volunteers who founded ijgd was: to find new ways of social behaviour in breaking down barriers between people because of their cultural, social and racial differences. The first organized Camps with international volunteers took place in 1948. They targeted the reconstruction of damages left by the war, both in a more material and in socio-political regard. Nowadays we are an independent, nonprofit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. What started as a small project in Hanover has grown to become a renowned professional organisation with more than 5.500 volunteers taking part in various projects (volunteer work in Germany and abroad) each year. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Young people are encouraged to make independent decisions or to stand up for marginalised social groups. This includes the promotion of understanding, and the dismounting of prejudices, between members of different nations, social classes, religions and world views. Our youngest target group are Teenagers from 14 years old. We host them in or send them abroad to international workcamps. In our longterm voluntary service sector our volunteers can make a social, ecological or political year in Germany from 16-26 years, to go abroad the volunteers need to be 18. We also offer the "Federal Voluntary Service" (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) which is a great opportunity for all ages after 26. Furthermore the ijgd is not connected to any church and is independent of any party-affiliations. The work of the ijgd is carried out by six branches and their regional offices, all of which are recognised as non-profit associations. A voluntary executive board watches over the fate of the organisation. ijgd is an association with tradition and clear goals. The work it is based on several principles which are: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti- discrimination and political education. - - - DEUTSCHE VERSION Die ijgd organisieren seit 1949 Freiwilligendienste. Wir sind ein unabhängiger, gemeinnütziger Verein der internationalen Jugendarbeit, anerkannter freier Träger der Jugendhilfe und eine der größten und ältesten Workcamp-Organisationen in Deutschland. Jedes Jahr begleiten wir rund 5.000 junge Menschen in Dienste im In- und Ausland. Die Organisation wurde direkt nach und noch unter dem Eindruck des Zweiten Weltkriegs gegründet, um Völkerverständigung und Frieden zu schaffen. Die Intention der jungen Freiwilligen, die ijgd gegründet haben, war: neue Wege des sozialen Miteinanders zu finden, um Barrieren zwischen Menschen aufgrund ihrer kulturellen und sozialen Unterschiede abzubauen. Die ersten organisierten Camps mit internationalen Freiwilligen fanden 1948 statt. Sie zielten auf den Wiederaufbau von Kriegsschäden, sowohl in materieller als auch in gesellschaftspolitischer Hinsicht. Heute sind wir ein unabhängiger, gemeinnütziger Verein für internationale Jugendarbeit, ein anerkannter Träger der freien Jugendhilfe und einer der größten und ältesten Workcamp-Organisationen Deutschlands. Was als kleines Projekt in Hannover begann, ist zu einer professionellen Freiwilligendienst-Organisation mit jährlich mehr als 5.500 Freiwilligen in verschiedenen Projekten (im In- und Ausland) gewachsen.
