KINONIKI SYNETAIRISTIKI EPICHIRISI SYLLOGIKIS KE KINONIKIS OFELEIAS APANO MERIA SYROU

The idea for SCE Apano Meria was born in 2015 through an open assembly of citizens of Syros and was finally established in 2017, with the aim of highlighting, protecting and preserving the Northern part of the island (Apano Meria). In the first years of its operation, the SCE managed to mobilise and inform dozens of citizens about the issues of the protected area and the geological importance of Syros through a multitude of events, workshops, seminars for farmers and winegrowers, exhibitions, workshops, cultural events both in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, as well as in farms in Apano Meria. Moreover a small-scale, mobile Precious Plastic recycling and reuse workshop (Precious Plastic) was created by the SCE in 2019 which is used for crafting workshops and educational events. The biggest goal of the SCE is the creation of a counter-paradigm of tourism in Syros that protects, studies and highlights the island all year round instead of solely consuming its resources and leaving them exhausted by September. To that end, the SCE created a research base that hosts young scientists and volunteers who visit the island either to carry out their research mainly focused on the protected area, or to participate in seminars or volunteer programs.
