DGI will strengthen the voluntary associations as a framework for sports with an emphasis on community, challenge and health in order to promote the association's people's enlightening qualities. With the association as a starting point, DGI will engage as many people as possible in sports. Values DGI works from two basic points of view - a humanistic view of humanity and a democratic sympathy. Humanistic view of man A humanistic view of human beings is based on respect for the individual's right to develop freely in responsibility. It includes: • Respect for the individual and his or her ability to help shape the world around him or her • The right of everyone to develop in freedom under responsibility • Recognition of the individual's meaning and value Democratic sympathy Democracy concerns organizational form and decisions - but more than that. Democracy is to a large extent also a form of treatment and an attitude. Democratic compassion involves dialogue, inclusiveness and openness. It means: • Openness and transparency underlie the decision-making processes. • DGI supports the individual's commitment and participation in the joint decisions. • DGI respects the right to have different views and to express them. • Active co-operation and commitment are a prerequisite for participation in the common affairs. • Decision-making processes in DGI are based on dialogue and cooperation. • The majority ultimately decides on necessary, common affairs with respect for the minority. In this light, democratic compassion is an attitude that underlies all decisions and, in a broader perspective, the development of communities in DGI. Sports, people and the outside world The humanistic view of humanity and democratic compassion are the foundation of DGI's work in all its aspects. Resting on this basis, there are different dimensions in DGI's work: • The practical sport • The human resources • The outside world Sports In practical sports, DGI emphasizes three values: • That sport is challenging - both physically, mentally and socially. Only by testing our limits do we become wiser about ourselves. • That sport promotes joy, physical well-being and the development of social networks. In a broader perspective, health concerns the framework for the individual's ability to take care of his or her life. • That sport contributes to the development of an engaging community. Developing experiences and identity in the encounter with others is crucial for the cultural perspective of sport. DGI works to ensure that all three values are present - albeit in different strengths in different connections.
