FOKAIA is a social enterprise whose mission is to generate and promote sustainable economies and models of inclusive, high-impact social development in Sicily and across the Mediterranean. Overall, FOKAIA is a living laboratory born in the heart of the Mediterranean, bringing together individuals and stakeholders to exchange ideas and develop integrated strategies and interventions aimed at the regeneration and sustainable development of the territories where it operates. Like the primordial fire from which it takes its name, FOKAIA is a participative space for research and action that transforms fragility into strength, what is extinguished into a spark, promoting innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions to contemporary challenges. FOKAIA works with people and communities, with a special focus on young people, to build innovative, inclusive, and sustainable initiatives in the areas where it operates. FOKAIA follows the following strategic approach: - Participatory design, developing initiatives by listening to the needs and aspirations of local communities. - Activation of multidisciplinary networks among organizations, institutions, businesses, young people, professionals, and public and private stakeholders, to foster the integration of skills, visions, and grassroots practices. - Strengthening the technical, managerial, and organizational capacities of actors and beneficiaries involved, enhancing the transformative ability of local communities to imagine and shape their own future. - Co-development of research activities carried out in close collaboration with universities, research centers, and scientific institutions, with a particular focus on social innovation, environmental sustainability, circular economy, and sustainable development. FOKAIA operates in the following areas of intervention at the local, European, and international levels: Social inclusion & innovation, Circular economy & environment, Sustainable development & governance. In addition, FOKAIA is committed to co-developing international cooperation strategies and interventions in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East, in collaboration with institutional, scientific, and technical stakeholders, with an emphasis on networking, capacity building, and strengthening the skills of organizations and communities in the regions where it works.
