In collaboration with the youth, we produce a variety of cultural and recreational services, promote young people's public participation and provide young people with support and advice. Our services are aimed primarily at young people aged 10–18. We employ over 400 people, over half of whom are youth workers. We operate out of approximately 90 locations around Helsinki. Our youth work is carried out at youth centres, other service locations, and in the form of various projects. In addition, the department provides support for youth organisations and groups. Within the City of Helsinki's organisation, the Youth Department is part of the field of Education and Cultural Affairs. The department's activities are steered by a politically nominated Youth Committee. The Youth Department is directed by the Youth Work Director. The Youth Department's annual budget is approximately EUR 28 million, and the department actively carries out both Finnish and European youth work. The department has long been a pioneer in the fields of youth information and guidance, youth workshop activities and the development of online youth work, among others.
