Chitambo Development Foundation-(CHDF)

The Chitambo Development Foundation (CHDF) is grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting marginalized rural communities in the Chitambo District of Zambia. Founded on the principle that sustainable development is most effective when driven by the community, CHDF empowers local people to identify their own challenges and co-design lasting solutions. The foundation primarily serves women, youth, children, and the elderly, working to dismantle the deep rooted social and economic barriers that limit quality of life in rural Zambia. CHDF envisions a world where all rural inhabitants live with dignity. Its mission is to bolster the socio-economic well-being and resilience of marginalized groups through a Community-Centered Engagement Model. This philosophy moves away from traditional handout models, focusing instead on identifying and utilizing local resources. This approach is strengthened by strategic partnerships and a community philanthropy model that fosters local accountability and ownership. CHDF operates across six interconnected sectors to address rural poverty holistically: -Agriculture and Livelihoods: To combat food insecurity, CHDF promotes climate-smart and conservation farming. It supports smallholder farmers with technical training in sustainable agronomy, livestock production, and market access. A primary focus is empowering women and youth through financial literacy and income-generating cooperatives. -Education: Breaking the cycle of poverty is central to CHDF’s work. The foundation supports disadvantaged students in accessing secondary and tertiary education, promotes adult literacy, and invests in improving educational infrastructure to ensure conducive learning environments. -Health: Addressing gaps in rural healthcare, the foundation focuses on maternal and adolescent reproductive health, mental health awareness, and menstrual hygiene management. By partnering with government institutions, CHDF works to strengthen the dignity and well-being of rural households. -Environmental Sustainability: To build climate resilience, CHDF advocates for afforestation, waste management, and wildlife conservation. By establishing environmental clubs, the foundation fosters a culture of stewardship among the youth to protect vital forest reserves like Mulembo and Kanona. -Social and Civic Development: The organization strengthens social cohesion by working with traditional leaders to reduce harmful practices, gender-based violence, and early marriages, while promoting youth engagement through sports and cultural preservation. CHDF actively seeks collaborations with donors, organisations, the private sector and individuals. Whether through grant funding, technical exchange, or material donations, CHDF is committed to professional accountability and high-impact delivery. By mobilizing local capacities and fostering strategic partnerships, the foundation continues to build resilient, empowered, and dignified rural communities in Zambia.
