Hatay Eğitim ve Gençlik Derneği (HEGDER) / Hatay Training and Youth Association was established in 2017 by volunteer teachers in Hatay, Türkiye, to address and prevent youth addiction and harmful behaviors. Initially focused on fighting drug addiction, HEGDER has since broadened its mission to include a wide range of youth-focused initiatives, aiming to foster personal development and social responsibility. The organization actively engages young people through educational, cultural, artistic, and sports activities to promote their reintegration into society and healthy lifestyles. HEGDER collaborates with public institutions, NGOs, and the local community to support individuals recovering from addiction and to provide youth with constructive outlets. Following the 2023 earthquakes in the Hatay region, HEGDER expanded its role, providing support for refugee integration and post-disaster recovery efforts. The association's activities also include awareness and prevention training, sports events, cultural excursions, and environmental initiatives, which create inclusive opportunities for youth from various backgrounds. The organization currently has 25 members and 10 active volunteers. HEGDER works closely with local educational institutions, including Hatay Mustafa Kemal University and Iskenderun Technical University, to engage students in their initiatives. Hatay’s rich cultural history and vibrant tourism, agriculture, and logistics sectors further enrich HEGDER’s community projects and offer a dynamic environment for youth engagement. HEGDER's key focus areas include youth leadership and development, education and lifelong learning, community engagement, mental health and well-being, and sustainable development. Through these efforts, HEGDER aims to empower young people, equipping them with leadership and problem-solving skills, fostering civic engagement, and supporting environmental sustainability.
