Department of History, society and human studies at the University of Salento

University of Salento was established in 1955 and, since then it pursued the aim of promoting knowledge, skill and merit by offering a wide range of educational opportunities. From law to science, economics to engineering, humanities to media studies, the University provides academic pathways to a multiplicity of professions as well as post-graduate and specialist courses tailor-made to meet the changing needs of the labour market. With more than 800 professors and researchers, working in 6 Faculties with 24 Bachelor's degree and 28 Master's degree programs plus 1 single-cycle degree, 500 technical and administrative staff, 47 language teachers and some 17.000 students, the University of Salento has grown rapidly in recent years, consolidating and reinforcing its role as the keystone of the local economic, cultural and social system. Research activities rely on 8 Research Departments, 12 Inter-departmental Research Centers, 17 Research Centers, 11 Ph.D. Programs, 11 National public research institutions cooperating with UniSalento (CNR, INFN, INFM, etc.). In this academic context, the Department of History, society and human studies brings together researchers and teachers in the main areas of humanities: historical studies, education sciences, psychology, sociology, geography and territorial studies, political science, economics. The specialized competences of the Department's staff have three main purposes: 1) to analyze and understand the social phenomena, individual and collective behavior, the man-environment relations in a rapidly changing world; 2) to use the scientific research tools in order to govern the complex problems that arise in contemporary societies; 3) pass on to future generations, through teaching and research, the critical knowledge to understand and manage social change and innovation.
