Atalaya has become one of the most prestigious Spanish theatre companies and a benchmark in theatre research. This has been highlighted by leading critics and recognized by the jury that awarded it the 2008 National Theatre Prize, “for the creation of an original space for performance, production, training, and theatrical reflection, the result of a long professional trajectory.” Today, it is the highest-rated theatre company according to the evaluation criteria of the INAEM (Spanish Ministry of Culture). Throughout its 40-year career—which it celebrated in 2023—Atalaya has performed in over 600 theatres across 50 countries on six continents, as well as in all Spanish provinces. It has participated in nearly 200 international festivals and received 60 awards, five of them international prizes from non-EU countries. TNT has participated in several cultural programmes of the European Union together with leading European performing arts centres. It was the only Spanish representative in the Culture 2000 programme “European Theatrical Laboratories as Cultural Innovators,” alongside Odin Teatret (Denmark), Grotowski Center (Poland), Théâtre du Soleil (France) and TTB (Italy). Within this framework, TNT hosted in 2004 the XIII Session of the ISTA – International School of Theatre Anthropology, directed by Eugenio Barba, the largest theatrical event in Seville since Expo’92. Since then, TNT has taken part in numerous European cooperation projects such as Moving Project, Caravan and Caravan Next, developing community theatre and social inclusion through art. In 2020, despite the pandemic, TNT organized Mundo Magallanes, a large-scale community theatre project connecting citizen groups from “Magellanic cities” across four continents. Many of these workshops involved participants at risk of exclusion and young actors from the TNT Laboratory. TNT also participated in FATE (Future Academies in Tour in Europe), working with young refugees and unaccompanied minors, and in Dreams Traces Travelling Containers, creating a European “dream bank” of migrant artists’ stories. Currently, TNT is a partner in the TREES Project, led by DAH Theatre (Serbia), raising environmental awareness through theatre. Beyond international collaboration, TNT regularly offers workshops for children and adults, and its Laboratory serves as a space for young performers to learn from some of the most renowned teachers and professionals in the performing arts, combining education, creativity, and social engagement.
