Associació Verificat

Verificat is a Barcelona-based non-profit dedicated to combating disinformation through fact-checking and media literacy education. Its work centers on political and scientific fact-checking and helping citizens critically engage with information. Verificat's newsroom continuously monitors news in Catalonia using investigative and data journalism methods, while its education initiatives focus on digital literacy, especially among students and seniors. Since 2020, Verificat has led the Desfake program, which evolved from workshops into a broader educational initiative, including a Train of Trainers program and support for integrating media literacy (MIL) into school cultures. Supported by Catalan government funds, Desfake has impacted thousands of students across Spain, equipping them with critical information skills. Verificat is also a member of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) and the IBERIFIER hub. Verificat has developed a range of initiatives centered on media and information literacy (MIL) and combating misinformation across diverse demographic groups. One of its flagship programs is Desfake, which enhances digital literacy in schools through workshops and a Train of Trainers model. The program has grown to include a digital platform, engaging hundreds of teachers and students across Spain. Verificat's expertise in working with older adults is exemplified by the Lies Threaten Health project, which teaches seniors to critically analyze digital information, with a focus on health-related content. This initiative features workshops, intergenerational meetings, and the creation of replicable training materials. Additionally, Verificat's role in the SUM project, co-funded by the EU's CREA Program, aims to empower seniors across Europe through MIL, using methodologies similar to Desfake but specifically adapted to the needs of the elderly.
