"The Association of Municipalities of Saint James Way (AMCS) was created in 2015 as an entity to join all the municipalities from the French route of the Camino de Santiago in order to promote and protect the Jacobean itinerary. It currently has 102 members municipalities from the 5 Autonomous Communities and the 9 provinces it traverses. Its general statutory purpose is the development of activities aimed at the defence, dissemination, promotion and encouragement of their knowledge among the populations of the Camino, in the area corresponding to the municipalities through which the Camino de Santiago traverses, along its traditional itinerary, also called the "French" Route. This involves all actions helping to support the municipalities in welcoming and caring for walkers who visit their localities in the transit to Santiago. Among its objectives of course is to "launch collaborative relations between all the municipalities through which the traditional itinerary or French route of the Camino de Santiago runs in order to protect and promote the Jacobean route" and "cooperate with the Regional Administrations and the State Administration, respectively, in the competent bodies concerning protection and promotion of the Camino de Santiago representing and defending the own local authorities’ interest in all policies related to the Way." For all this, their target groups are the municipalities, and for this reason, the local populations, and of course every walker who decides to live the experience of the pilgrimage by the French Saint James Way. But, indirectly, stakeholders are any person interested in the Camino de Santiago who aspires to its protection as a heritage asset, and that of the territories that traverses. Among the most relevant activities, apart from those specific to its ordinary functioning that already involve an important work of inter-municipal cooperation, are those of joint dissemination of the Way (implementation of promotional and communication materials), awareness on the route (intervention in training), pilgrims’ safety (standard waymarking, agreements with State Security Bodies and Forces), cultural cooperation (inter-municipal cultural programming), public-private collaboration (business forum), and promotion of the Way’s values and support for traditional pilgrimage (volunteer programs on the Way)."
