Iasi Penitentiary is a maximum security prison, located in Iasi, in the north-east of Romania. Iasi Penitentiary is subordinated to the National Administration of Penitentiaries from Romania and implicitly is a structure of the judiciary system. At present, in the Iasi Penitentiary there are 578 prisoners incarcerated, on different detention regimes: maximum security regime, closed regime, semi-open regime, open regime and also, for short periods of time, the regime for individuals placed in custody, all adults and male. Out of the total number,223 are young people, with ages between 18 and 30 years old. By definition, the mission of our institution is ensuring that the fundamental rights of the individual are respected when they execute a sentence or detention measure, and ensuring that inmates are educated for reintegration and to be accountable. To be reintegrated into society after their release, the persons deprived of their liberty participate in educational, cultural, therapeutic, psychological and social counseling, moral and religious assistance, schooling and vocational training / retraining. To reintegrate the prisoners into society, employees of the Iasi Penitentiary work with specialized state institutions, non-governmental organizations and with the local community requesting the support of family, relatives and friends of the inmates, within the limits set by the regulations in force. In the last years, Iasi Penitentiary has been involved in implementation of European projects, through which we have been improved the conditions of detention and have trained part of the employees. Having experience in both writing and implementing projects, the staff of the Iasi Penitentiary is prepared to develop a project accordingly. We think by implementing projects we will be able to improve, even more, the prison conditions and on the other hand the employees can learn new things.
